Daniel Enkaoua is a French painter, whose work makes me think of a cross between the Spanish realists like Antonio Lopez Garcia and the expressive mark making of someone like Ann Gale.

The Hidden Place 
Enkaoua has fascinated me for a few years now. I find his images compelling primarily due to his mark making, which indeed appears to have something in common with Ann Gale, but delivers a very different result I believe, although I have only seen Enkoua’s work in real life and not Ann Gale’s. My impression is that although they are similar they deal with quite different issues. Ann Gale appears to deal primarily with the process of perception while Enkaoua’s work goes into another sphere beyond the physicality of the subject. Have often wished I could see them hanging side by side! I think compositionally Ann Gale has a greater sophistication which reveals something more about her work, and strenghtens it, than Enkaouas compositions do. Thanks for posting!

Enkaoua for me is the greatest figurative painter alive today, his paintings are poetically beautiful and feal almost timeless. The often constant reworking of his paintings leave a surface that reveals something beyond reality.It is difficult to compare and see possible similair approaches to his work but painters like Gwen John, Walter Murch and olga Boznanska come to mind.
